چکیده

It was with great pleasure and honour to accept the invitation to make a presentation a t the symposium celebrating the life-long work of Aaron Temkin and Richard Drachman. The work of Aaron Temkin was particularly influential on our own during the development of the CCC method for electron-atom collisions. There are a number of key problems that need to be dealt with when developing a general computational approach to such collisions. Traditionally, the electron energy range was subdivided into the low, intermediate, and high energies. At the low energies only a finite number of channels are open and variational or close-coupling techniques could be used to obtain accurate results 11, 21. At high energies an infinite number of discrete channels and the target continuum are open, but perturbative techniques are able to yield accurate results [3]. However, a t the intermediate energies perturbative techniques fail and computational approaches need to be found for treating the infinite number of open channels. In addition, there are also problems associated with the identical nature of electrons and the difficulty of implementing the boundary conditions for ionization processes. The beauty of the Temkin-Poet model of electron-hydrogen scattering is that it simplifies the full computational problem by neglecting any non-zero orbital angular momenta in the partial-wave expansion, without loosing the complexity associated with the above-mentioned problems [4-91. The unique nature of the problem allowed for accurate solution leading to benchmark results which could then be used to test the much more general approaches to electron-atom collision problems. The immense value of the Temkin-Poet model is readily summarised by the fact that the initial papers of Temkin [4] and Poet [7] have been collectively cited around 250 times to date and are still being cited in present times [lo, 111. Many of the citations came from our own work during the course of the development of the CCC method, which we now describe.

Convergent TCAO close-coupling calculations for electron transfer, excitation and ionization in intermediate keV He2+–H collisions

Our recently developed two-centre atomic orbital (TCAO) close-coupling method is applied to He2+–H(1s) collisions in the impact energy range from 20–400 keV amu−1. Convergent cross sections are obtained for this system by using a large number of bound and pseudostate basis functions on the target and a limited number of bound states on the projectile. Cross sections for electron transfer to 1s,...

Close-coupling approach to Coulomb three-body problems.

The convergent close-coupling method is shown to overcome the remaining discrepancies with experiment of electron-hydrogen ionization. Consequently, this method is able to calculate accurately the Coulomb three-body problems which include electron collisions with hydrogen and helium (within the frozen core model), and helium double photoionization at all incident energies and kinematical or geo...

Various problems in electron-atom collision theory

We outline progress in a broad range of research projects that are currently being undertaken in our group. These include the formulation of ionisation amplitudes in Coulomb fewbody problems, a new convergent close-coupling implementation for electron-helium collisions, elastic electron-magnesium scattering at very low energies, and the calculation of electron-cesium spin asymmetries and differ...

Quantum mechanical calculation of ejected electron spectra for ion–atom collisions

We present a quantum mechanical method for calculating the ejected electron probability distribution in ion–atom collisions. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation, formulated with a classical straight-line trajectory for the internuclear motion, is integrated directly on a two-centre momentum space grid. The time-dependent wavefunction at large internuclear separation is analysed to extract t...

Single and double ionization in C6+ + He collisions

Singleand double-ionization processes in C6+ collisions with the He atom at an incident energy of 100 MeV/amu are studied by direct solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. A time-dependent close-coupling method based on an expansion of a one-electron three-dimensional wave function in the field of He+ is used to calculate single-ionization cross sections. A time-dependent close-cou...
